Have been Black spectators unfairly policed on the Boston Marathon?


A video displaying police presence alongside a stretch of the Boston Marathon course has gained a whole lot of consideration on social media after a bunch of police lined up their patrol bikes to dam a bunch of primarily Black spectators from the course. Some query whether or not the group was being unfairly policed due to their pores and skin color.

Within the video, Mike Remy of the Boston-based Pioneers Run Crew (PRC) factors out that the Newton Police are lined up with their bicycles between a bunch of spectators and the runners at mile 21. “I don’t even know what the police presence is all about,” Remy stated within the video. Remy goes on to imagine that the group he was in was being over-policed as a result of they’re Black.

In response to Newton Police, the spectators have been notified 3 times about staying off the course and behind the rope barrier and never impeding runners. “We responded respectfully and requested that each one spectators have been to remain behind the rope and never encroach onto the course,” stated the Newton Police in a press release. “When spectators continued to cross the rope, the Newton Police used bicycles to limit the course and hold the runners and spectators secure.”

Members of the PRC wrote on social media that the police’s message was “heavy-handed and pointless” when in comparison with police response elsewhere alongside the marathon route. The run group argues they have been handled unfairly and says different teams who have been celebrating runners in the identical trend didn’t obtain the identical therapy.

The Pioneers Run Crew demanded an apology from the B.A.A., the Newton Police, and an official assertion from each the mayors of Newton and Boston.
